Localizing Food / Minimizing Packaging
Ghili is designed to encourage a community based 'what's mine is your's' approach to the production and distribution of food.

Global awareness of 'food miles' and the need to eliminate the amount of transportation and packaging required, from farm to plate, are arousing a renewed passion for quality food in a more health-conscious society. Consumers are demanding cheap, seasonal, 'green' produce like never before.

Market trade has been around since time began, yet as one of the earliest forms of retail, it's surprising how little advancement there has been in terms of equipment. Ghili is a stylish and easy-to-use market-vendor unit based on user-centric design, providing a simple solution to this previously gruelling task, eliminating the need for excess lifting and the hauling of heavy loads.
The stall is a single unit, which allows farmers/vendors to bring it directly from the point of harvest where, fresh produce is loaded into vented crates in the stall. The the all-in-one unit can be slid directly into a delivery van as the legs fold up. Once at market, Ghili rolls out of the van and into position for the day's sales. The vendor simply has to open the lid, slide the top tub backwards, and pop the unit into a stylish three-tiered market stall, with the produce instantly on display.
Issue 39 of 'Curve' magazine is out now and features the final year project 'Ghili' by Monash University industrial design alumnus Sarah D'Sylva. The 'Ghili' is an innovative market stall system designed to be manufactured with rotational moulded trays and an anodized aluminium frame.
